Understanding Your Figure Suit Fit

January 13, 2020 by Monica Leave a Comment

In our fun little DIY Bikini community last week, I asked YOU to be the teachers! Here was my question: Deep creases, wedgies and excessive buttcrack gathers (😅 I know there's a better description, but this gets straight to the point) indicate that the bikini is too large for the body. This occurs even in the most minimal of cuts. How do you fix it? Two main remedies were proposed: Decrease the width through the crotchShorten ...

SEW-ALONG: the ADVANCED Molded Bra Pattern

November 19, 2019 by Monica Leave a Comment

Last year, I released the MIKO Molded Bra Cup Pattern (Advanced) due to an overwhelming request to eliminate the edge bindings on the Beginner Molded Bra Cup pattern. And finally, the video tutorial/sew-along is here! This is a lengthy video, so make use of the table of contents given in the video's description to go to the timestamp that you need. Resources, tools and supplies: Purchase your SOFT molded bra cups from the MIKO ...

A Long Overdue Update

November 11, 2019 by Monica Leave a Comment

What a wild year it’s been! In less than 20 months, I somehow managed to break my arm, move across the country three times, and finally, return to a career that I had left behind three years ago.  In the words of the beautiful Carrie Underwood, “...I need a smoke break.” No, I don’t smoke. But damn.  I’m currently gazing at a Californian desert-scape outside of my home. Clusters of Joshua Trees fill my view, their branches ...

How to Transform Your Vertical Princess Seam

May 10, 2019 by Monica Leave a Comment

If you're tired of the same old look, try out this method for transforming your vertical princess seams into diagonal seams across your molded bra cup. Sometimes, different style lines are all you need to embellish your design portfolio. This method is a direct application of a wonderful bra tutorial from Amy Chapman of Cloth Habit for transforming a diagonal seam line into a vertical one. The method that I'll be showing here uses the ...

How to Adjust the Crotch Depth

February 14, 2019 by Monica Leave a Comment

Although the MIKO Figure Suit pattern is available in two height groups, you may still need to add or take away length through the crotch. All bodies are unique, after all! I'll give you an example of a specific situation to help illustrate why you may need to make this pattern alteration: A member from DIY Bikini had a client whose waist and hip/glute measurements were 29" and 35", respectively. Based on the MIKO Sewing Pattern sizing, ...

Behind the scenes. Tell me what YOU want to know w Behind the scenes. Tell me what YOU want to know with knit and/or elastics! ⁣
⁣
My manager once said, “you can outright reject a design without even analyzing it if the designer has chosen the wrong material.”⁣
⁣
And y’all...that was transformative for me. Mind you, this advice was from my engiNERDing world 😆 but I have carried it over to my sewing and pattern making passion. ⁣
⁣
This one phrase consumed me and all I could obsess about was material behavior, especially of athletic knits and compression garments used in the medical field. OBSESSED. And I am honestly bursting at the seams to share what I have learned. ⁣
⁣
But again, tell me what YOU want to know! Otherwise, you will be subject to my nerdy ramblings 🤓🤪⁣

My function in aerospace requires me to be extreme My function in aerospace requires me to be extremely sharp in material properties. While my engineering career is not my passion, it has absolutely helped me solve problems with my sewing projects. To me, everything is physics! ⁣
⁣
Whenever I’d research sewing topics, especially regarding materials and elastics, I’ve been left feeling like I needed more answers. That’s why I married my two worlds and why I am extremely grateful for my career path. And honestly, sewing has always kept me motivated in my career (though I often daydream about sewing while at work 😆)⁣
⁣
I used to hide the fact that I am a mechanical engineer. And it’s ok that you may not trust me because I didn’t go to fashion design or pattern making school. But, I’m confident in the knowledge I’ve gained over this past decade and I don’t want to keep it locked away from you! ⁣
⁣
I want to share with you everything my noggin has connected between my two worlds. I believe that it will help you make the best decisions when choosing your project’s supplies. There are only so many patterns that I can realistically draft and distribute, so my ultimate goal is to share concepts with you that’ll help you develop a brainiac box of tools that you can take into EVERY project! Whether it’s creating fabulous/functional/long lasting/stylish garments to creating sewing patterns that fit your bodies!⁣
⁣
Anyway, thanks for making it to the end of my monologue 😆 This is a short clip from one of my future lessons, giving a basic lesson on weft knits. Check out your fabrics and see if you can identify the knit!
